4-seater Convertibles
They are taken as very luxurious sports cars. Although the two-seater roadster are the most emblematic, practically every range of cars for private use has versions without a roof. What are the most popular 4-seater convertibles?
Almost forgotten and misunderstood
In the early days of the automotive industry, cars were produced, ‘by default’, without a roof. Despite the arrival of the saloons and the rest of the bodywork that turned the cabins into closed spaces, convertibles held a privileged place among the preferences of drivers for decades. However, since the 1970s, its demand has been progressively decreasing.
The first blow was received in the United States, when their security was harshly questioned. Later, progressively they began to be branded as ‘unnecessary whims’, part of the ‘superfluous expenses’ generated by the wildest capitalism.
Although what really marked the decline not so much in the number of units sold, but in their production, was the fact that they are not sold in China. The quality of the air in the big cities of the yellow giant makes it impossible to circulate in a car without a roof. Lacking demand within this market, most of the big brands began to put them aside.
4-seater convertibles
Despite not being fashionable, a cabrio always looks good. In summer, spring and fall, driving and traveling aboard these machines with the cool breeze as your companion, creates an unbeatable sensation. In winter it is not unreasonable to circulate with the sky as a witness.
In addition to the ‘traditional’ sports two-seater, there are 4-seater convertibles of almost all sizes, even all-wheel drive off-road models. This allows outdoor driving to be taken well beyond the asphalt. Among the most outstanding models of automotive today, the following stand out:
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible
In 1991 it became the first of the 4-seater convertibles to be marketed by the Stuttgart automaker. Despite its luxuries and a price worthy of this German house, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible is perfectly a family car.
The latest generation has a generous 4.83 meters in length, so that all its occupants travel in comfort. There are a variety of gasoline or diesel engines, with powers ranging from 193 to 333 hp. The technological section is similar to that of the sedan version.
Opel Cabrio
Mounted on the same platform as the Opel Astra, this convertible walks practically without rivals in its sector. It serves the middle segment of family cars, which distances itself from rivals considered premium , such as the Mercedes Benz E-Class Cabrio.
The convertible has a canvas roof that gives it a striking classic look. It offers a spacious 280-liter boot, as well as enough interior space to avoid knee problems in the rear seats. Its motorization offers powers of 140 and 200 CV, remarkable for a car in its category.
BMW 6 Series Convertible
The Munich-based German manufacturer has several 4-seater convertibles in its luxury car catalog. One of them is the BMW 6 Series Convertible.
It is the largest of the brand’s roofless cars, also the most luxurious. Some voices question its heavy and not very agile driving compared to its smaller brothers, the Series 2 and Series 4. But power is not lacking: 313 hp in the most discreet version and 450 hp in the larger version, with four-wheel drive wheels as an option.
Fiat 500C
This semi-convertible Italian is the smallest member of the list. It measures just 3.57 meters long. It is also the least expensive model of those mentioned here.
It is a car with an urban spirit, agile to live with solvency in the traffic of any city, as well as to park in any gap. The power of its engine is 105 hp.
Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible
This is an off-road vehicle that, in terms of performance and space, is located at the opposite end of the Fiat 500. With a length of 4.63 meters, its aptitude is completely off road .
Its spacious rear seats stand out, with the advantage of being the most comfortable of the 4-seater convertibles. However, given its large dimensions, its 250-liter boot seems scarce.
