BMW 4 Series, A Great Family Of Sports Cars

This model is offered in three configurations, the classic three-door coupe, convertible and a five-door grand tourer; the ‘4’ designation replaces the previous 3 Series Coupé
BMW 4 Series, a great family of sports cars

The BMW 4 Series was a before and after in the brand when it saw the light in 2013, since it became the culprit of ending the life of the 3 Series Coupé. It is still the same car, its successor, but with another name … What difference does it make? What matters is that the Germans have been left with a product that grates perfectly.

Slim, powerful, dynamic and available in a multitude of versions, the BMW 4 Series has been created to beat all its rivals and become a best-seller,  and it is succeeding. However, the public to which the model is focused now is far from what it was a few years ago with the E36 and E46.

These were smaller and more accessible, so BMW was left with no choice but to create a 2 Series.

Exterior and interior design

Aesthetically, the 4 Series sports one of the best designs in the current BMW catalog. In addition, it is available as a 3-door coupe, a convertible version and in a practical five-door coupe (GranCoupé) that faithfully maintains the silhouette of the base version.

In its five-door version, the BMW sports car becomes an object of desire that will have generated many doubts among those who originally had the idea of buying a 3 Series, the model from which it is derived.

Like the model on which it is based, the front end sports an aggressively shaped bumper, with a slim, tapered grille that extends sideways to meet sculpted, menacing-looking headlamps.

The side features a simple line of tension under the glass, which disappears when it reaches the bulky rear wheel arch. Furthermore, this was the first BMW to incorporate a gill in the fin. For its part, the rear features headlights that now have Full LED technology (in addition to OLED technology , already seen in the M4 CS and GTS).

The interior, on the other hand, is the same that can be found in the 3 Series, which results in a design that, although it is correct and can still give more of itself, is already one step behind what seen in the latest launches of the Bavarian brand.

We find this delay in both technology and materials, quality of adjustments and even in the ergonomics of the controls, among other elements.

Mechanical range

Mechanically, the 4 Series has the possibility of mounting four and six-cylinder in-line gasoline and diesel engines turbocharged with powers ranging from  150 hp for the 418d  to 326 hp for the 440i. For its part, the traction is rear, while the total xDrive is only available in combination with the most powerful mechanics.

Regarding the gearbox that is responsible for transmitting power to the wheels, a 6-speed manual transmission or an 8-speed ZF automatic is available. What this coupe lacks is a hybrid version like that of the 3 Series, a wise decision as it is a car with sporting aspirations.

Prices

Of the three bodies available, it should be noted that the coupe and GranCoupe bodies are offered for the same price with the same engine, transmission and equipment. This leaves the Cabrio version as the most expensive exponent, notably, since between the two there are several thousand euros of difference.

Due to the extensive range of the BMW 4 Series, we are going to take as a reference the lowest price of each of the versions. Starting with diesel, the 418d starts at 41,300 euros, a figure that increases by 3,000 euros for the 420d.

Above these are the 430d and 435d, which are offered from 54,550 and 61,950 euros, respectively. Mention that in the case of the 435d the all-wheel drive is equipped by default, without the possibility of eliminating it.

As for gasoline options, rates start at € 41,650 for the 420i. 49,600 euros will be the amount to be paid in case of leveling up to 430i. Finally, and as the top of the range of the BMW 4 Series, the 440i does the same from 59 199 euros.
