The automotive sector has been immersed for a few years in a technological revolution from which there will hardly be any possibility of turning back. For fans, the arrival of certain technologies has become quite a negative affair, and with the latest multimedia system introduced by Mercedes it is expected that our driving experience will continue to evolve.

Known as MBUX, it is in short an artificial intelligence built into the car. At the moment only two vehicles of the brand are known that equip this new equipment – optional, of course – which are the new generation of the Mercedes A-Class and Mercedes Sprinter.

Be that as it may, the brand has been quick to confirm that from now on all its new launches will be able to equip this new system.

The MBUX system in depth

The new MBUX system is just the beginning of something very big. It is the first step taken to complete the CASE project. In the future, this Mercedes project will include car connectivity, electrification, shared use that is increasingly in demand and even autonomous driving.

Starting with the most basic, this system is integrated into the new digital dashboard screens, and  increases the customization options for the left screen, which serves as the dashboard. This translates into up to three types of fully customizable graphics and even the option to save your style to load it if the car is used by more users.

As with the Virtual Cockpit of the VAG Group (Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT, Skoda, Lamborguini, etc.), there is the possibility of setting the navigation system on the left screen. In this case, the cartography of the map would occupy almost the entire screen, leaving room only for essential data such as speed and remaining autonomy.

As for the right display, it can now be controlled via the steering wheel controls or by touch. This screen also serves to display the navigation system, but is capable of many more functions. Now it has up to three levels of information, one within the other, which are accessed depending on the function you want to carry out.

Each Mercedes will have its own ‘Siri’

In 2011 there was the arrival of Siri to Apple’s flagship product, the iPhone. It was the first time that the general public had access to a personal artificial intelligence, or at least, the closest thing to it. Since then, this and other similar programs have been refined and it is in 2018 that their arrival in the automotive industry will take place.

Its operation is quite similar to that of the apple product, since it will not be necessary to interact with it in a ‘robotized’ way or according to predetermined commands. Either activating it through the steering wheel or saying “Hey Mercedes”, thanks to the Linguatronic you will be able to speak to it naturally.

An example is a “put my favorite song” and it will directly search for it among your files. You will also be able to adapt the temperature of the air conditioning with a simple “I’m hot / cold”. MBUX will understand your needs in very different ways, a great success.

Maintaining the similarities with the Californian smartphone , you can also record events on the calendar, remember the times in our agenda and even write and send messages, as well as dictate the received ones. It reaches such a point that it can remember your most listened to radio stations and most common routes.

Finally, we said that in addition to artificial intelligence, the MBUX system included augmented reality, which is complemented by the navigation system. In its operation, the external cameras of the vehicle intervene, which scan the necessary objects – signs, addresses – that are presented to us in an enlarged way on the screen.
