Do's and Don'ts on the windshield in frost

When the cold arrives, there are places where frost is usually unavoidable. When we return to our car we can find the crystals full of ice, which we need to melt quickly due to the need to drive. What can and can we not do on the windshield in frost?

What to do on the windshield in frost

We surely hear a lot of advice from friends and neighbors to remove the ice from our windshields. One thing is going well for each one, and they want to share it with us, but the truth is that many customs when removing ice from the windshield can harm more than benefit. This is what you can do:

Use the heating

This is the best method of removing ice from the windshield and the fogging that builds up inside. Start the car and direct the heating air towards the glass. Sure, this will take a while, and if you have to rush to work it may not be the most appropriate option, but at least it is not harmful to your vehicle.

Special products

There are de- icer products on the market that are sold in spray and that offer an immediate solution to this problem. You just have to spray on the windshield and in a few seconds the ice will disappear. This would be one of the fastest ways to remove frost.

Alcohol

The alcohol has a lower freezing point to the water and therefore can easily melt the ice, although it takes a few seconds. This will only work if the layer of ice on your glass is not very thick; if it is, you will have to resort to other methods.

Scratch the ice

A plastic scraper will be perfect to remove the ice that accumulates after a frost on our vision glass.  If the layer is very thick, this method may not be sufficient. If you don’t have one, you could use a CD case or card that does the same thing.

Wiper washer

If there is not much ice, maybe pouring water on the windshield and running the ‘wipers’ may be enough. If not, it will be an extra action after removing the remains with other products or in other ways.

What not to do on the windshield in frost

Do not pour hot water

Hot water on frozen ice can create a reaction that will crack your car window. The contrast of temperatures in the crystals generate breakage. It is the same as when you have tried to pour cold water into a hot glass or vice versa.

Don’t put alcohol on the windshield wiper

Many who know that alcohol helps remove ice. They think it is more useful and faster if they add it to the windshield washer reservoir, but this could damage and even puncture the reservoir.

Non-metal

As we said before, if you want to scratch the ice you can do it, but always with a plastic material. Do not use metal scrapers, not even the one from a glass ceramic because irreversible scratches will be made on the moon.

No heating

Although as we said before, the heating will remove the ice and the cold, do not wait for the car engine to warm up to turn on the heating, as it could happen the same as if you applied hot water. The best thing is that you start, direct the vents to the glass and turn on the heating. The air will gradually heat up and the glass will not notice any sudden changes.

Remember that you will also need to remove the ice from the headlights so that they give you the visibility you need to drive. There are products on the market that help repel ice on windows and headlights when the cold hits. While they don’t completely avoid it, they can be of great help.

Follow these practical tips that come from professionals and do not be guided by well-intentioned advice, but that can cause damage to your car windows.
