The new McLaren 720S marks a new starting point for the British marque. After more than five years offering endless versions developed on the same basis, in 2017 they kicked off the second generation of the Super Series. It is the beginning of the renewal of the range and it arrives loaded with news.

Within the select group of supercars, the new car from Woking has established itself as the benchmark. It beats clear rivals like the Ferrari 488 GTB, Lamborghini Aventador and the more powerful versions of the Porsche 911. It even surpasses the famous Tesla Model S P100D and its immediate acceleration.

Exterior design

Congratulations must be given to McLaren designers and engineers. Masterfully they have achieved a much cleaner and more aggressive design than in the MP4-12C or 650S and better aerodynamics. The front, much sharper than before, perfectly integrates the headlights into the air intakes.

It is striking how fluid the side is, with a multitude of lines that give the car a differentiating appearance. The absence of the previous air intake behind the door is noticeable, and it is that they have managed to divert the air through grooves located in the door itself, behind the body panel.

With these changes, it has been possible to reduce drag and maintain proper cooling for the propeller, mounted in a central-rear position. Finally, the new mobile spoiler can generate up to 30% extra downforce at critical moments such as braking.

Interior design

The cabin is presented in full dress with a sporty and technological air. The instrument panel is now digital, and has two screens : the normal one that appears in the photos and a smaller one, which shows little more than the revolutions, speed and gear.

To access this second screen there is a button on the dashboard that rotates the frame 90 degrees. McLaren calls this the  Folding Driver Display, and it’s the main novelty of the cabin. Otherwise, the dashboard is oriented towards the driver, and the central screen is larger and higher in resolution.

specs

The McLaren 720S debuts the umpteenth evolution of the brand’s V8 biturbo engine, which in its latest specification has increased its displacement to 4.0 liters. This improvement is due to the large number of new elements of the propeller – the brand speaks of 41% – such as pistons and the double-entry turbo.

It certifies a power of 720 hp and a torque of 770 Nm, which catapults it from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds and at a top speed of 341 km / h. All this power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic dual-clutch gearbox.

In addition to the notable weight reduction compared to its predecessor, handling on the road – and especially on the track – has improved considerably. All these improvements are due in part to the aforementioned latest generation Monocage II ‘ chassis , much lighter, stiffer and stronger.

Highlight the Proactive Chassis Control II system, which with three controls we can choose between comfort , sport and track modes ; and parameters hese affect the chassis, to the engine and suspension. The biggest novelty of this system is that it can act on each aspect individually, so you can go with the engine in circuit mode and the chassis in the most comfortable mode.

Prices

Finally, mention that the asking price for a McLaren 720S is 284,700 euros without options. Attending to the official configurator of the brand, we appreciate that there are three different design lines: the 720S, 720S Luxury and 720S Performance, differentiated by the material, and by the interior and exterior decoration.

Among the most prominent options for the exterior is carbon fiber, available for a multitude of elements, even with part of the monocoque in sight. Inside, the most striking thing is the roof of the glass doors, an option that increases the feeling of space and the exclusivity of the car.
