BMW X2

BMW  e proposed to end 2017 in style with the launch of one of its models that has generated the most controversy in recent years. It is the BMW  X2, and it is the sixth member of its SUV range ; the German family still awaits the arrival of the largest, the  X7.

Its main rivals in the market, the Mercedes GLA, the new Jaguar E-Pace and the Range Rover Evoque, play the same trump cards in an increasingly competitive segment.

Breakthrough design

As we said, the X2 launches a more adventurous aesthetic kit, although this will not be the only option available. BMW offers us up to three different styles to customize the exterior of our X2: Basic (normal versions), M Sport , more sporty, and M Sport X, the jacket variant.

Before reviewing the appearance of the new BMW, it should be remembered that the M Sport versions add a lowered suspension and more sporty bumpers;  add to all this silver trim simulating underbody protection in the case of the M Sport X.

In general, the X2 has smaller dimensions than the X1,  so it only maintains its width, and at the same time has a very similar interior design, in line with the latest brand launches. Otherwise, the new SUV looks solid, robust and dynamic.

The low height of the vehicle and its small glass surface cause a somewhat negative visual effect of seeing too much sheet metal close to the ground. However, BMW has solved it with a battery of curved surfaces and lines where it touches, which emphasizes the youthful and modern character of the X2.

Now, what undoubtedly stands out the most about the car are its large, aggressive front and rear headlights, with a very thin and elongated design. Of course, with LED technology. Also, the prominent front grille is striking, which despite being the image of the brand, loses its typical kidney shape to present a pentagonal shape.

Conventional interior

All the novelty that is the fresh exterior design of the X2 is diluted once we enter the cabin. In general, they have borrowed all the components of the Series 2 Active Tourer and have implanted it in a new bodywork.

There is nothing wrong with that, as the finish qualities of this interior are rather typical of higher segments. In addition, being a latest batch launch, its technology is up to date.

Mechanics

Mechanically, the X2 has only increased the options available since it hit the market late last year. We currently have two gasoline and three diesel engines, although it is expected that a high-power gasoline engine will land throughout the year.

As for gasoline, we find the X2 18i and 20i, with powers of 140 and 192 hp, respectively. Both versions are available with single-wheel drive sDrive or all-wheel drive xDrive, as well as a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic.

More complete is the diesel range, with 18d, 20d and 25d versions of 150, 190 and 231 hp each. The most powerful ones come in combination with the xDrive traction, while for the most accessible it is available as an option. As for the transmissions, the 6-speed manual is maintained, but the automatic becomes 8-speed.

Prices

The rates to access a BMW X2 are not exactly cheap, although they are in the same price range as the rivals mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Starting at 35,050 euros, we find the smallest diesel version, the X2 sDrive18d, a figure that increases to 42,500 euros for the X2 xDrive20d. It should be noted that for the most powerful diesel we have no references to date.

If we look at the gasoline versions we find the 35,850 euros from which the X2 sDrive18i starts and the 40,450 euros for the X2 sDrive20i. In general, the options with the optional xDrive drive involve an extra cost of around 3,000 euros.
