Hyundai IONIQ, Solution For All Tastes

The Hyundai IONIQ tries to dethrone the Toyota Prius as the king of hybrids. For this, it brings more options than any model of its competition.
Hyundai IONIQ, a solution for all tastes

The Korean brand has taken a long time to join the world of electricity, but the wait has been worth it, since the new Hyundai IONIQ comes with all the available artillery: hybrid version, plug-in hybrid or 100% electric.

The world of hybrid saloons already has a king, and it is none other than the Toyota Prius. You only have to take a walk through a big city to realize that taxi drivers love it, and that its effectiveness in the urban world is more than proven.

With the approach that this model brings, it covers a large number of different needs and types of clients. By approach, this model competes directly with the Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf or Volkswagen Passat GTE.

Design

At 4.47 meters in length, the Hyundai IONIQ is positioned as a fairly compact mid-size saloon, it is seven centimeters shorter than its Japanese rival, the Prius.

The IONIQ brings a less transgressive design than the Nissan Leaf.

Aesthetically, it is a less risky car than the Toyota, with more conventional lines but with a certain futuristic character.

The front end follows lines similar to those of its siblings, such as the i40, sporting a wide grille and long, sharp headlights. The grill changes depending on the type of engine it has, for example, in the electric model mode it does not have cooling slits as there is no combustion engine to cool.

If we take a look at the  sideline, this Hyundai looks like a simpler car than it really is. The fall of the roof is very progressive, it is not the typical three-volume body of saloons. In the lower part of the doors it has a trim that as an option can be chosen in a color different from that of the bodywork.

The rear is, without a doubt, the one that transmits more character in this Hyundai Ioniq. The rear window is divided in two, in the style of the Honda Civic. The taillights, located in a very high position, give a robust appearance to the car, with a certain SUV air if we look at it from behind.

It is a less risky general design than for example that of a Nissan Leaf, it is designed to appeal to a greater number of public. Although, it does not have the originality of a Toyota Prius.

Hyundai IONIQ dynamics

The Korean model is very comfortable on wide roads such as motorways and motorways, with a very good level of soundproofing and a suspension that absorbs irregularities of the road very well.

On roads with slow curves, the suspension holds the body well, but if we raise the pace, the reactions begin to show somewhat abrupt, although at all times it transmits security and control to the driver. On these types of roads, stability control takes longer to kick in than on the Toyota Prius. Dynamically it is a notch above the Toyota.

Inside

The Hyundai IONIQ does not stand out for being a particularly spacious model, it complies in most dimensions, but there are a large number of saloons that surpass it in everything: a Skoda Octavia, for example.

The front seats are spacious, it has a fairly traditional dashboard for a car with so much technology, but, as with the exterior, the Korean brand has wanted to grace as many people as possible. It has the traditional touch screen configuration integrated into the dashboard in a high position and the climate controls located below. The gear lever, unlike the Prius, also has a normal format.

The rear seats  suffer from the downward design of the roof, leaving an interior headroom that is too fair. For legroom it is in an intermediate position. The central square, despite having a slightly intrusive central tunnel, is not suitable for taking long trips.

The trunk changes depending on the engine configuration:

  • The IONIQ Hybrid has 443 liters of luggage space, the same as the plug-in version. It is a very worthy trunk for a car of these characteristics and one of the largest among its competitors. Keep in mind that they house a group of batteries for the electric motor.
  • The IONIQ Electric reduces the cargo space to 350 liters of luggage space. It is not such a good figure, since a Nissan Leaf, for example, gets 370 liters with practically the same length.

Engines

This is where the available offer of the Hyundai IONIQ makes you stand out from the rest, adapting to all needs:

  • Conventional hybrid : it has a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine with 105 HP of power, coupled with a 43 HP electric motor. Combined power is 141 hp, with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.8 seconds.
  • Plug-in hybrid : it shares the system with the normal hybrid but adds more power to the electric motor, which with 61 HP of power, its polymer batteries allow our protagonist to circulate for 50 km in 100% electric mode. In combined power it manages to perform 0 to 100 km / h in 10.6 seconds.
  • Electric : it is the 100% electric alternative of the Asian model. The batteries have a capacity of 28 kWh, slightly lower than the Nissan Leaf (30 kWh). The estimated autonomy is 250 km, which is not bad for an electric saloon that develops 120 hp of power and has a maximum torque of 295 Nm.

Its design is deceptive, since despite the drop at the back, it is still stored a good height in the trunk.

conclusion

There are more and more arguments that push us to buy more efficient cars with the environment. This Hyundai IONIQ, has everything you need to stand up to its rivals, and also has more possibilities than them when it comes to its configuration.

Driving in electric mode, if you haven’t already, is something you have to experience before purchasing a pure combustion car. Hooks from the first acceleration.

In addition, it does not have any disadvantage to become the main car of an average family, since it has enough space for it. Ingredients brings, and many, now it is you who must give it a try.
