The most stolen cars in Spain

Many are the Spaniards who year after year see how their cars are stolen, but this does not happen by chance, those who take our cars from us know what they are doing and are aware of which car they have to go for. Today we are going to talk about the most stolen models in our country.

Top 10 most stolen models

Something that we must bear in mind when talking about this issue is that most of the stolen vehicles are mid-range. Its success is due to the fact that in the countries to which this type of car is taken, mid-range vehicles are much more in demand than high-end vehicles.

Another factor to take into account is age, cars that are older are easier to sell their parts on the black market. For this reason in the ranking of the most stolen we can find models which are no longer marketed.

This is the case of the Citroën Xsara (in which we have to include the minivan version of Picasso), which was the most stolen car in 2015, with 5% of complaints for car theft corresponding to this model.

They also have a preference for the SEAT brand, 3 out of 5 SEAT Ibiza that are stolen are more than 10 years old. But the Spanish brand does not only have that model on the list of thieves’ favorites, another one that tops the list is the SEAT León, which seems to have great success in Eastern Europe thanks to its design.

However, the longevity of these cars and their ease of selling parts on the market is not the only thing that makes them an easy target, safety also plays an important role. Mid-range models are easier to steal.

We often think that parking lots are safe, and that by parking there our car will run less danger than if we park it on the street, mistake. Many are the studies that reveal that our vehicles are looted while we spend our leisure time in a shopping center.

Another of the thieves’ favorite moments to steal from us is while we refuel, it has been detected that it is stolen 7% of the time while we are going to pay for gasoline, so we must not forget to lock our car properly

Faced with all this, we could think that the security in our models has improved a lot, however the measures taken by the robbers to achieve their objective have also done so. Radio frequency capturers and scanners have been developed.

With these devices, thieves are able to copy the unlock code of our car, as a result of we close remotely, once inside they use hacked switchboards or state-of-the-art machines which allow them to use an unencoded key.

For its part, the city in which we live also influences a lot, by preferring anonymity, thieves prefer localities in which the number of inhabitants is greater. Ceuta and Melilla are two of the thieves’ favorite cities.

Still, the westernmost part of Andalusia, Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia are not far behind. But of all of them the one that takes the cake is Madrid, the capital had during the year 2 016 a whopping 49 436 robberies.

The second city in the ranking is Barcelona with 19,560 looting, followed by Seville (13,266), Valencia (11,088), Malaga (6,251), Cádiz (4,885) and Alicante (4,703). These thefts reach 219 million euros in losses. The most stolen models are:

  • SEAT Leon
  • Volkswagen golf
  • BMW 3 Series
  • SEAT Ibiza
  • Renault megane
  • Audi A4
  • Ford Escort
  • Ford Fiesta
  • Ford Focus

One of the main reasons for theft is usually absent-mindedness. There is little we can do about the techniques and professionalism of thieves. It is possible that the urto is a bit more complicated with the GPS with location function, because in this way the police can find our car in less than six hours.

As we have mentioned before, thefts through capturers are the order of the day, so the most important thing is that we lock it instead of using the remote mode that our car offers us.
