Volkswagen Polo

Although it is still a car of only about 4.0 meters, the current utility of the German firm enjoys considerable interior space, with a boot of no less than 351 liters; in addition, it is offered in a GTI variant with a 200 hp 2.0 turbo engine

The Volkswagen Polo was born 42 years ago and since then it has been an undeniable success. This has been the case to the point that 3 out of every 10 cars sold by the German brand correspond to this car. The current generation is the sixth of this iconic model.

The exterior of the Volkswagen Polo

The new Polo is bigger and more versatile than the previous model. It has a body that is 4.05 meters long –80 mm more than its predecessor– and a trunk that grows by 71 liters to reach the figure of 351 liters.

The new Polo is similar in size to the third-generation Golf. It is only marketed with a 5-door body since, according to the data obtained by the brand itself, only 5% of the Polo sold in the last year had a three-door body.

In front, it has many features that are reminiscent of the current Golf, although behind it it keeps its own personality. The new Polo will continue to be manufactured in the plant that Volkswagen has in Navarra, which will house most of the production of this model worldwide. Under its new look, it uses the MQB platform in its A0 version. That is to say, the same one that we already saw in the new SEAT Ibiza.

The interior of the Volkswagen Polo

Inside, there are several aspects to highlight. On the one hand, there is an obvious gain when it comes to interior space, as the new Polo benefits from a 90mm longer wheelbase than its predecessor. This translates into more legroom for passengers sitting in the back seats.

There is also a good height, while the width is just right. The interior boasts impeccable fit quality and the materials used feel pleasant to the touch.  Of course, in the entire cabin, only those in the middle and upper part of the dashboard are soft materials.

On the other hand, one of the great novelties of the Polo VI is the inclusion, optionally in the standard model and as standard in the GTI, of the virtual dashboard that is already used by other models of the Volkswagen Group.

In this way, it becomes the first urban that can have equipment of this type. Depending on the finish, the central touch screen can be 6.5 inches or 8 inches.

The Volkswagen Polo engine range

In terms of the engine range, the Polo is available with gasoline, diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) engines. The first ones start from the block 1.0 of three cylinders of the Volkswagen Group, with the exception of the Polo GTI. The non-turbocharged variants of the 1.0 three-cylinder engine develop 65 and 75 hp, while the two supercharged TSI-types reach 95 and 115 hp.

Specifically, the 95 hp version is the most balanced in the range and the one that, according to the brand’s own estimates, will represent the highest number of sales. Regarding the diesel Polo, a 1.6 TDI block gives rise to two versions, one with 80 hp and the other with 95 hp, which boast very low consumption: 3.7 l / 100 km.

As for the Polo GTI, it is based on a new 2.0 TSI engine with 200 HP of power with which it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in just 6.7 seconds. The DSG automatic transmission is only available on the Polo 1.0 TSI and Polo GTI.

Finally, the 1.0 TSI CNG 90 hp engine can run on both gasoline and compressed natural gas. In addition to the aforementioned GTI, the finishes of the range will be, from less to more equipped, Edition, Advance and Sport.

The price range of the Volkswagen Polo

Regarding the price range of the Volkswagen Polo, we can find a starting price for the 1.0 model of 65 CV with edition finish for 14 740 euros. When we go to the Advance version, we find the first model with this finish for 16 045 euros.

Next, the Sport trim comprises prices from € 17,780 to € 22,160. Finally, at the top of the range is the Volkswagen Polo 2.0 with a generous 200 hp and a GTI finish, for a price of 26,325 euros.
