What It Is And How To Get The FIA ​​superlicense

The rules have been changing. The International Automobile Federation has modified the structure of the points that are needed to obtain it. What is it and how to get the FIA ​​super license ?; without a doubt, it is information of interest.

What is the FIA ​​superlicense?

The super license is a card that drivers need to participate in Formula 1 and all kinds of competitions at the highest level. Until now, the winners of competitions such as F2, European F3, Indycar, Formula E and LMP1 received the 40 points required to obtain it.

How to get it?

The FIA ​​World Motor Council, meeting in Paris, agreed on the modifications. From now on, runners will have to score 25 points in three years. Failing that, they must accumulate six events in Formula 2. The requirement to complete 300 kilometers in Formula 1 cars is maintained .

F2 and IndyCar dot

The provision that gives 40 points to the first three places in F2 remains in force. Also the points accumulated in the last two seasons of the GP2, competition that contributed 30 points to the third classified.

The IndyCar keeps the number of points it contributes. 40, 30 and 20 for the first three classified; the rest of the runners, until completing the first ten positions, will also earn points. F3 and FE decrease in their valuation

As part of these modifications, the points contributed by European F3 and Formula E have been reduced. 30 and 25 are needed for first and second place, the rest remains the same.

In GP3 there has also been a decrease to 25 points; but in the Formula V8 3.5 the reduction has been more extensive. The champion will receive 15 points less, going from 35 to 20 for occupying the first place.

 Less resistant championship

The World Endurance Championship, the LMP1 in the  WEC ,  will also see the contribution of points reduced. The first and second classified will receive 30 and 24, respectively, compared to the 40 and 30 that were awarded before. In Super Formula, the number of points that the first six drivers will obtain also decreased.

 Competitions such as the Nascar Cup, IndyLights and IMSA were included in the new superlicense structure. They will be subject to competitions on circuits approved by the FIA. The point allocation system will also apply to A licenses, the pre-super license level.

Why the change?

Some drivers arrived at Formula 1 without having participated in events such as Formula 2. Apparently, the intention of the FIA ​​is to make it difficult to reach the premier class of motorsport.

Before they only had to draw 300 laps during two days of testing in a Formula 1. If they required another license, they consigned a written communication in which the team assured that the pilot knows the regulations.

More value to the F2 and IndyCar

For this 2018 season, all drivers must meet at least one of the two conditions requested by the FIA: six races in Formula 2 or have accumulated at least 25 points in their superlicense in the last three years.

The intention of the FIA ​​seems to be to increase real value to the main categories of single-seaters, the F2 and IndyCar, before making the jump to F1.

Affected by the modification

As an example, the Mexican Alfonso Celis, Jr. has not competed in F2 or scored Superlicence points. However, he has played 9 free practice sessions in F1 since 2015.

In 2018 you will not be able to participate in any event, as you must complete six events in F2. Drivers like Susie Wolff and  Max Verstappen will be affected by this decision. They have participated in F1, but not in F2.

Other decisions of the FIA

  • The insertion of the Halo in the cars allows teams to work on the chassis of their cars. This protection system for the drivers head will affect the aerodynamics of the cars.
  • The incorporation of 4 cameras in the cars is another modification. They will be located on the nose, in front of the pilot, on the top of the vehicle and next to the shark fin.
  • The single-seaters will have improvements in the resistance of the chassis and in the retention systems of the tires in 2018. Fuel metering will be the responsibility of the Sentronics company.
